Stovetop Potpourri for Fall
Crisp juicy apples, warm cinnamon, pumpkin spices and sweet caramel.
The smells of fall abound at this time of year. Wouldn’t it be great if you could capture them all and bring them home?
Well guess what, girl? You CAN. For CHEAP. GET EXCITED.
If you’re not familiar with ‘stovetop potpourri’, it’s a little different from the dusty, over-perfumed dried rose petals your Gran used to keep in a ceramic dish on the back of the toilet tank (like that was supposed to help…).
I had my first introduction to stovetop pot pourri years ago when I walked into my friend Jenn’s apartment. A bunch of us were headed over there for an epic ‘Friendsgiving’ potluck dinner. I got off the elevator and opened the door to her place and was instantly hit with All The Delicious Smells of fall. I asked her if she had a scented candle lit, because OMGIneedoneofthose, and she told me it was actually a stovetop potpourri.
The concept is ridiculously simple. Whenever you’re cooking something on the stove, you walk into the house and it smells amazing. And then you get to EAT whatever it is that smells amazing. But what if you used that same method to just SMELL things without ever eating them? That’s what stovetop potpourri does. The possibilities are endless, but here’s my recipe for stovetop potpourri that truly captures the delicious scent of fall.
What you need:
A large saucepan or soup pot
I small jug of apple cider ($2.50)
1 apple, sliced into wedges (.20)
8ish cinnamon sticks (2-3 tbsp ground cinnamon is fine too) (.50)
1 tbsp nutmeg (.05)
1 tbsp ground cloves (.05)
3 tbsp brown sugar (.25)
What you do:
Chuck it all in a pot a few hours before you’re having guests over. Turn the heat to medium for about 10 minutes, and then reduce it to low. Don’t put a lid on it, since you want the smell to waft out of the pot and fill your home with its deliciousness!
After an hour or so you will be able to smell the delightful aroma of fall allll over your house. <3
Total cost: $3.55
Stay tuned later in November for my Stovetop Potpourri for Christmas recipe! I know you’ll love it as much as this one.
